Physiotherapy
Using an integrated approach for treating pain, our highly skilled and experienced therapists will work with you to find the root cause of your pain and create a customized treatment plan that will help you live a healthy life. Physiotherapists study the science of movement and learn how to pinpoint an injury’s root causes. Physiotherapy treatment is beneficial if you have a new or recurring acute or chronic injury/pain, disease or disability that affects how your body functions.
Physiotherapists focus on both prevention and rehabilitation.
Your Shelbourne Physiotherapist will assess, diagnose, and treat your injury through a combination of methods that may include; manual therapy, manipulation, acupuncture, IMS (Dry Needling), modalities such as Ultrasound, Shockwave, IFC (Interferential Current) and heat and cold therapies along with stretches and an exercise program as needed to support and empower you in your recovery.
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) / Dry Needling
Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) is an effective treatment for acute and chronic pain of neuropathic origin. It is based on scientific neurophysiological principles. IMS involves the insertion of fine acupuncture-type needles into the body where muscles have shortened or contracted. It is problems at these points that are often at the root of long term pain. While a muscle is tight and contracted it can't heal properly, and with IMS you are stimulating a healing process and helping the muscles to relax.
IMS treatment is best suited to treat soft tissue pain that shows no obvious sign of ongoing tissue damage or inflammation, such as many forms of; neck/back pain, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder and fibromyalgia, amongst others. It is often effective when other forms of therapy have failed.
Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of various conditions that involve the pelvic floor or symptoms that manifest in this area. The pelvic floor includes muscles, ligaments, nerves and connective tissue. It plays an important role in the body by providing support for the bladder, genitals, uterus and anus. We treat women, men and children of all ages.
Our specially trained Pelvic Floor therapists will assess your ability to contract and relax these muscles and their synergy with the other core muscles. They will also assess the joints and muscles of your lower back, hips and sacroiliac (SI) joints since problems here can stress your pelvic floor muscles.
*PLEASE NOTE* Depending on the condition of the patient, a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy appointment MAY include an internal vaginal and/or rectal exam. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapists have obtained additional training to be able to complete internal exams. Please keep in mind that an internal exam is never mandatory, and alternatives can be provided to the patient if necessary. It is okay to come in for your appointment if you are menstruating.
Vestibular / Concussion / Vertigo Physiotherapy
Vestibular Physiotherapy addresses problems with your vestibular system. Your vestibular system commonly experiences symptoms such as vertigo, balance problems, dizziness, spinning, nausea and vomiting, motion sensitivity, lightheadedness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), double vision, or impaired balance.
Our Shelbourne Vestibular Physiotherapists have additional training and experience in the assessment and treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), vestibular nerve deficits, Neuritis & Labyrinthitis, Meniere's disease, cervicogenic dizziness, Central Nervous System (CNS) deficits, fistulas within the inner ear, Vestibular Migraines, and concussions.
Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is a recent development that is used successfully by healthcare providers that specialize in musculoskeletal disorders. The acoustic waves used in Shockwave therapy interact with your tissues causing the overall medical effects of accelerated tissue repair and cell growth, analgesia and mobility restoration. After only 2-3 sessions, over 80% of patients report a significant reduction in pain.
Shockwave Therapy can be used to treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions, in particular, those involving areas where major connective tissue attaches to bone. Common sites that can be successfully treated are:
Foot – Plantar Fasciitis, heel spurs & achilles tendonitis
Knee – Patellar tendonitis, jumper's knee & shin pain
Elbow – Tennis or golfer’s elbow
Shoulder – Rotator cuff tendonitis & calcification
Hip – Trochanteric bursitis
Muscles – Various trigger points throughout the body and muscle tension
Bones – Stress fractures, non union's (delayed bone healing)
Nerves – Morton's Neuroma
